Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon - Plastic Ono Band

Yoko Ono was on Fallon tonight, with Plastic Ono Band.  Sean Lennon on guitar in the band.  Yoko getting her freak on, worked up over the D train.  Video should be available by tomorrow…I’ll edit to include link - I was just too excited to wait to post.

Yoko’s music isn’t often my cup of tea, but she’s always been fearless, and her music was way ahead of it’s time, and that’s something to respect.  And the 1970 Plastic Ono Band album is one of my all-time favorites.  And come on - for Beatles freaks like me, this is pretty frigging cool!  Sean has a lot of his father’s tics and idiosyncrasies.

“Ft. Hood’s commander, Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, said today that there are unconfirmed reports that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shouted “God is great” in Arabic before opening fire yesterday at the Army base. Again: we will soon be able to hear Hasan’s motivations in his own words. Even if he shouted such a thing, it would no more reflect on his co-religionists than does the fanatic who murdered Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller and who happened to consider himself a devout Christian does on his co-religionists. It’s worth remembering that nearly all mass shootings in this country are committed by white men. Do we have a white-man problem on our hands? Again, this is a teachable moment. Already I’m seeing conservative writers on Twitter start to set themselves up as the real victims of PC hysteria for daring to oh-so-bravely point out that Hasan is a Muslim Muslim Muslim. Let’s not let anyone get away with euphemism or prejudice. Those in the media who insist on pointing out that Hasan is a Muslim should have to account for why, exactly, they find that characteristic so significant. Chances are they can’t and won’t — because few people want to face up to their own bigotry, and fewer still will want to do so in public.”

Hasan May Have Said ‘Allahu Akbar.’ And?

Ft. Hood, Facebook, and Flamewars

ryking:

Just got into my first Facebook flamewar with right-wing trash trying to tar and feather anyone who points out that Nidal Malik Hasan was the victim of intense and prolonged bigotry. Several right-wingers denied that bigotry exists anywhere, let alone in the military.

It boggles my mind that there are people denying that bigotry is an issue in the military, or trying to downplay it as a factor in Hasan’s rampage. 43 people were SHOT yesterday, so it clearly IS an issue. One of many in this case. And all issues related to this case MUST be examined.

Set aside the fact that Hasan needs to be — and will be — punished. We need to ensure that an incident like this NEVER happens again.

Disagree with that and you become part of the problem instead of the solution.

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them.

so true

This doesn’t present the topic well. The argument that only women have a say on abortion is both sexist and rather unfair for men who also have part in the impregnation process.

Yes, I do support the right to have a choice about abortion and for the government not to be able to tell me whether or not I can, but dammit I would consider my partner’s opinion on the topic if I was ever presented with the issue.

It’s not just a women’s issue.

It absolutely is.  When making a personal choice, it’s nice to consider your partner’s opinions because it’s meaningful to them emotionally, but when we talk about legislation, it’s an issue that effects women, not men.  Women are the ones who are effected medically, women are the ones who are responsible financially, women are the ones who carry the child, women are the ones whose bodies change.  Men, at the most, have an emotional attachment to the concept of a child.  How is it sexist to be offended at Men passing laws that dictate the health of women for something as casual as emotion?  I’d say it was more sexist to say “This might kill you, but think of how the guy feels!” than it is to say “A fetus is part of her body, not yours.”
